On July 5, 2017, Rod Cota was traveling with two of his coworkers when they came upon a semi-truck that had jack-knifed and was stopped in the lane. The semi was blacked out, so they couldn’t see it and struck the side of the trailer.

The car passed completely under the trailer, killing all three of them.

If the trailer had been equipped with side underride guards, the outcome that day likely would have been very different.
